When the Waters Receded: Reflecting on the Hill Country’s Rivers and Ruin

A personal journey through the aftermath of the Guadalupe River floods

For decades, the Guadalupe River has been a source of inspiration and joy, its serene waters and lush banks offering countless memories of tubing adventures and peaceful hikes.

Even during periods of drought, the river's charm remained undiminished.

However, the catastrophic floods of early July 2025 have dramatically altered this cherished landscape.

Strolling along the river's edge now reveals a scene of devastation: uprooted trees, layers of mud, and shattered bridges.

The once-familiar paths are unrecognizable, transformed by the sheer force of the floodwaters.

Among the hardest-hit areas was Camp Mystic, a century-old Christian girls' camp along the Guadalupe River.

Tragically, at least 27 campers and counselors lost their lives as the river surged to unprecedented levels.

The community's grief is profound, yet amidst the sorrow, there is a remarkable outpouring of support.

Volunteers from across Texas have converged on the Hill Country, assisting residents in clearing debris and beginning the arduous process of rebuilding.

In the face of such loss, the resilience of the community shines through.

While the scars on the landscape are deep, there is hope that, with time and care, the Guadalupe River will reclaim its tranquil beauty.

As the natural world heals, so too does the spirit of those who call the Hill Country home.

Texas Hill Country is a place of rolling hills, limestone creeks, and postcard sunsets—where winding roads lead to friendly towns like Fredericksburg, Wimberley, Marble Falls, and Boerne. It’s a region rich in German heritage, wildflowers, wine trails, and front porch traditions. Life here moves a little slower, a little sweeter, and always with a neighborly wave.
