Local Bus Drivers Become Unexpected Heroes, Rescue Campers Amid Flood Chaos

Kerrville ISD staff mobilize swiftly to evacuate stranded campers during devastating Hill Country floods

In the wake of the catastrophic July 4th floods that ravaged the Texas Hill Country, Kerrville Independent School District (KISD) employees emerged as unexpected heroes, orchestrating a daring rescue of hundreds of campers stranded along the Guadalupe River.

As torrential rains caused the river to swell nearly 30 feet in under an hour, camps like Camp La Junta and Camp Mystic found themselves isolated, with no electricity or running water. Recognizing the urgency, camp officials reached out to KISD for assistance in evacuating the campers before nightfall.

Responding without hesitation, over a dozen KISD staff members, including teachers and coaches, many of whom held Commercial Driver's Licenses, volunteered to drive school buses through treacherous conditions to reach the stranded children. Superintendent Brent Ringo, lacking a CDL, utilized his personal vehicle to transport campers, underscoring the community's commitment to its youth.

Upon arrival, the rescuers were met with heart-wrenching scenes: children in pajamas, clutching teddy bears, having grabbed only what they could in the chaos. The convoy navigated damaged roads and debris-laden bridges, ensuring the safe transport of campers to reunification points.

The emotional toll was palpable. Rick Sralla, Principal of Tivy High School, recounted the devastation witnessed during the mission, emphasizing the profound impact on both rescuers and those rescued. The community's resilience shone through as campers, despite the trauma, sang songs during the journey back, a testament to their spirit.

In the aftermath, KISD has prioritized mental health support, offering counseling services to students and staff affected by the disaster. The district also hosted a community blessing and worship service, fostering collective healing and solidarity.

The heroism displayed by KISD employees during this crisis exemplifies the strength and unity of the Kerrville community, turning ordinary individuals into extraordinary saviors in the face of unprecedented adversity.

Texas Hill Country is a place of rolling hills, limestone creeks, and postcard sunsets—where winding roads lead to friendly towns like Fredericksburg, Wimberley, Marble Falls, and Boerne. It’s a region rich in German heritage, wildflowers, wine trails, and front porch traditions. Life here moves a little slower, a little sweeter, and always with a neighborly wave.
